Building Sustainability Ratings

In the United States and in a number of other countries around the world, LEED certification is the recognized standard for measuring building sustainability. Achieving LEED certification is the best way for you to demonstrate that a building project is truly "green."  The LEED rating system offers four certification levels for new construction -- Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.


Deer Resistant Plants

Marcia England remembered this site from an article in the Tribune a few months back. They cautioned that hungry deer will eat almost any plant, especially in winter in areas with high population.   Try to make your landscape less attractive by avoiding deer favorites, such as arborvitae, yew, rhododendron and evergreen azalea, and tulips. They also recommended another Chicago Botanic Garden site for deer resistant plants –

This is a commercial site for a local nursery with timely articles on events, seminars and plant information. They also have a Kid’s Club, and info on current sales.


Home Depot Garden Club

Jan Stone called attention to the Home Depot Garden Club web site at a recent meeting, as a possible source of ideas and inspiration, in spite of the commercial nature of the web site.



Rita Janowitz recommends this site for Grand Kids and other children to see information about Garden Resources, Gardening for Families, Teacher's Garden opportunities and Shopping for kids at the Gardening online store.

My Garden Guide

Rita Janowitz offers this site which claims to be the World’s largest online Plant Encyclopedia, and contains Garden Tutorials and Pocket Garden Guides.

This site was offered to us by a representative of The Helpful Gardener, as a site that provides many helpful gardening tips and also has a Garden Forum where we can ask questions and get answers from people who have dealt with the problems we are inquiring about.


Wildflower Center and Native Plant Database

Bob Vetter suggested this site which is the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and the site contains a Database of Native Plants which Bob found very interesting.
